Have you ever come across a person who says they are a Christian and, while you are talking with them, suddenly says a bad word… or several? And that person says them as part of their usual vocabulary. So the question is: is speaking or saying bad words wrong?
It definitely is; it is a sin to say bad words (to curse, use profanity, etc.). The Bible is very clear; in the book of Ephesiansit says:
“Let no corrupt word come out of your mouth, but only what is good for necessary edification, so that it may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29
It also declares this:
“Whoever wants to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit.” 1 Peter 3:10
Summarizing the problem:
“With it we bless God and the Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the likeness of God. Out of the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, this should not be so. Does a spring pour out both fresh and bitter water from the same opening? My brothers, can a fig tree produce olives, or a grapevine figs? In the same way, no spring can produce both salt water and fresh water.” James 3:9-12
How clear the Word of God is in the book of James, making it clear that the lives of Christians, or “brothers,” should not be characterized by foul speech. Using the analogy of both salt water and fresh water coming from the same spring (something unusual for a spring), he explains that it is unusual for a believer to have both blessing and cursing come out of their mouth. We cannot praise God while cursing our brothers.
Jesus explained that what comes out of our mouths is what fills our hearts. Sooner or later, the evil in the heart comes out of the mouth in the form of curses and insults. But when our hearts are filled with God’s goodness, praise for Him and love for our neighbor will overflow. Our words will always reveal what is in our hearts.
In the Gospel of Luke it says:
“A good man, out of the good treasure of his heart, brings forth what is good; and an evil man, out of the evil treasure of his heart, brings forth what is evil; for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Luke 6:45
So, why is it a sin to use profanity, bad language, and to curse? Sin is a condition of the heart, the mind, and the inner man, which is manifested in our thoughts, actions, and words.
“For according to the inner man, I delight in the law of God” Romans 7:22
When we use profanity and curse, we are giving evidence of the contamination of sin in our hearts that must be confessed and repented of. When we put our faith in Christ, we receive a new nature from God; our hearts are transformed, and our words reflect that new nature God has created in us. Fortunately, when we fail, our great God is “faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore, brothers, I urge you by the mercies of God to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, which is your reasonable worship.Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:1-2
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
Perhaps you are someone who wants to seek the Lord, but profanity is part of the way you speak, because you have done it all your life. You must be very clear that using bad words, vulgar language, or cursing is not simply a speech habit, but a reflection of the condition of the heart. The Word of God teaches that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks, and therefore what we express reveals what is truly within us. As children of God, we have been called to live in holiness also in the way we speak, building others up and glorifying our Lord with our words.
A believer cannot praise God and, at the same time, curse their neighbor, because that contradicts the new nature we have received in Christ. Although we all fail at some point, God’s grace invites us to repentance and assures us of forgiveness when we confess our sins. For that reason, the goal of every Christian should be to cultivate a heart transformed by the Holy Spirit, so that our words may always be a source of blessing, testimony, and life.
Pray to the Lord and to the Holy Spirit, and tell Him that you no longer want to use that kind of language, and use the Bible verses as a tool to cleanse your heart.
